Clyde W. “Sonny” Porter Sr. of Colerain, formerly of Dorsch Road Martins Ferry, died Monday, September 26, 2022. Clyde was born on October 22, 1930, in Moundsville, WV a son of the late Clyde Melvin Porter and Ida “Billie” Gale Hall.
Clyde was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Martins Ferry for over 65 years. He served his country for nearly three decades in the U.S. Naval Reserves where he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He later was employed by Consolidation Coal Company, Ireland Mine and the Citizen’s Bank, Martins Ferry. Clyde also was involved in Mission work in Mexico and loved volunteer work and singing, playing music, camping, and spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving, cherished wife, Mary (Anderson) Porter in 2007; a son, Clyde “Chip” Porter in 2020; brother, Raymond Porter; grandson, Brian David Porter; and a granddaughter, Dawn Love Porter.
He is survived by 2 sons, James F. Porter, Bellaire, Joel E. (Peggy) Porter, St. Clairsville; 3 daughters, Kathleen M. (Jim) Meeker, Colerain, Sharon Lynn Porter, Bellaire, and Molly Sue (Michael) Rouse, Martins Ferry; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Lee Porter; 6 sisters, Jean Baker, Virginia “Tootie” Buckley, Doloris Roaden, Dorothy Howes, Helen Baker, and Florence Hood; 8 grandchildren, James (Stacie) Meeker, Mary Ellen Gust, Patricia (Dennis) Morgan, Kelle Sue Blount, Maura (Darius) Cline, Gretchen (Chris) McCormick, Christopher Cramer, and Kim Bilica; 14 great grandchildren; and 3 great great grandchildren.
Friends may call Saturday from 10 am until time of service at 12 pm in the Wilson Funeral Home, Heslop Chapel, 415 Walnut St., Martins Ferry, with Pastor Joe Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Cemetery, Pleasant Grove.
